- April 7, 2022, from 6:30-8:30 at the Newtown Campus of BCCC: I'll be teaching a one-evening course called "The Magic and Passion of Opera." Many people dismiss opera as a stuffy old art form where singers screech and audience members snooze. It's really anything but if you have done just a little homework before you enter the opera house or theater. These days, opera is alive and well, it's full of romance, intrigue, history, and art! In this session, I'll acquaint participants with a few representative opera plots (including two from the 21st century!), de-mystify opera jargon, and answer questions. Opera can be fun and challenging, and opera-goers can attend in their local movie theater with a bucket of popcorn. The Metropolitan Opera offers Live in HD operas on some Saturdays throughout the season, and encore screenings in summer. As this is a class, interested participants must register with the Continuing Education office at BCCC: https://issuu.com/bcccfoundationalumni/docs/continuingeducationmailer-spring22 (Opera and I are on page 3, but look at all the other cool stuff offered here!)
- April 14, 2022, from 6:30-7:30 at The Free Library of New Hope and Solebury: I'll be presenting "Information Literacy and Fake News," my popular bread-and-butter presentation from my day job! I spend my days teaching a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty about Information Literacy: the ability to find, evaluate, and ethically use information. Lately, the concept of fighting fake news has become wickedly important, too. For real, I make these topics interesting! I may not have musical examples here, but I do share a few short videos and a ton of resources. This presentation almost always evolves into a thought-provoking conversation, so why not stop by and check out the talk? I'll be glad to see you. The NH & S librarians would like you to register here: https://calendar.buckslib.org/calendar?cid=3891&t=m&d=0000-00-00&cal=3891&cm=2284&inc=0
